It could be the low price point, or its pretty appearance or even the fact that it’s so easy to use, jade rollers have become popular in the past year or two. The tool, that’s made of real jade stone, is said to offer myriad skin benefits such as decreasing puffiness of the face, reducing the appearance of fine lines and lymphatic draining too. The massaging movement is also beneficial in relieving muscle tension and giving the skin a glow.

Better absorption of products
Using a jade stone as a face roller is an age-old Chinese ritual being rediscovered in the field of aesthetics. A face roller made of jade or rose quartz helps in improving circulation, lymphatic drainage, thereby improving skin quality, explains Dr Jamuna Pai, cosmetic physician and founder SkinLab. “It is recommended to keep the jade roller at a cooler temperature before use. Since it helps in lymphatic drainage, the movements should always be outwards and upwards. Three to four strokes should be done on each area of the face and neck. It is best to apply a nourishing serum on the skin and then use the roller on it. It will help in the gliding motion as well as in better absorption of the serum,” she adds.
May have anti-ageing benefits
Post 30, a face roller can be used for various purposes. It is one of the DIY tools in keeping our face rejuvenated and healthy along with regular cleansing and exfoliating methods. Rollers can be of different types — it can be made of multiple tiny needles, ice rollers, electric rollers or stones like jade. Dr Shefali Trasi Nerurkar, consultant dermatologist, Dr Trasi’s clinic and La Piel says, “Jade rollers can increase the blood circulation to the skin, tones the muscle, stimulates the collagen production and flushes out toxins by draining excess fluid. They can also help plump up the cheeks, tone the face and decrease the puffiness which is one of the main signs of ageing.”

Another beauty fad
There are many beauty fads that become popular for a short while and then fade away. The jade roller is one of them, feels Dr Shuba Dharmana, dermatologist and medical director, Lejeune Medspa. “The craze to sell anything and everything wrapped in beautiful and clever marketing appealing to the vanity driven beauty industry is big. But there are some treatments and products that are worth the money and some that are just overhyped. Jade or rose quartz, are cold crystals that feel soothing and nice on the skin and whilst it’s considered cool to roll them on your skin, all you are actually doing is massaging your face. Massaging in the right direction does improve blood circulation and helps with lymphatic drainage that can decrease swelling and puffiness, but this can be achieved with any smooth marble stone or massaging device. Using jade in my opinion has no extra benefits,” she adds.
Soothing on the skin
Jade rollers are said to play some role in reducing face wrinkles. “I don’t think you’re going to get the same collagen stimulation from a jade roller that you would get from a treatment like microneedling and NanoFractional RF technologies. Most people who love using them are a fan of the ritualistic aspect and the coolness of the roller that feels soothing on the skin,” explains Dr Apratim Goel, cosmetic dermatologist and director Cutis skin studio. The tool generally features a larger stone for cheeks, jaw and forehead and a smaller stone for under the eyes and around the mouth.
