Mini’s new-generation crossover will soon be available as a more fuel efficient variant in the form of the 2017 Countryman hybrid.
Based off the second generation crossover, the new hybrid will deliver the familiar go-kart handling while consuming less fuel according to Sebastien Mackensen, head of Mini management.
“With this model we want to convince Mini customers of the benefits of hybrid drive and impress everyone who already as hybrid driving experience with MINI’s unique go-kart driving feel,” said Sebastian Mackensen, head of Mini management.
MINI claimed that at first glance, no one would able to recognize the test car as a hybrid model because of its integrated charging socket for its battery at the left side scuttle.
Almost everything in its interior remains the same, however, the start or stop button placed in the center of the dashboard now glows yellow instead of the previous red. Meanwhile, the rpm counter in the instrument cluster on the steering column has been replaced with a power display, which informs the driver about the electric motor’s power reserves before the combustion engine fires up.
The 2017 Countryman plug-in’s drivetrain gets the following three modes: Auto eDrive to balance petrol and electric power, Max eDrive and a Save Battery mode. The Auto eDrive standard mode permits speeds of up to 80 km/h and up to 125 km/h for the MAX eDRIVE mode are possible.
MINI said that the with the intelligent energy connected to the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), traction and drive stability are optimized via drive system.
Extended driving in Save Batter mode, on the other hand, allows enough power generation for purely electric driving later.
The exact hybrid powertrain has yet to be detailed however.
